Debossing

Debossing is a popular branding technique as it adds depth and detail to products like notebooks, journals, memo sets and card holders. With the debossing branding technique, corporate gifts and promo items look super chic and professional. Here we will look at the ins and outs of this great custom-branding option.

What is debossing?

Debossing is produced by pressing a metal die in the shape of a logo or design into the surface of a product using both heat and pressure, creating a permanent stamped impression below the product’s surface. This subtle and classy branding method creates a unique 3D look, and is ideal for genuine and imitation leather and many other materials. Due to the costs involved in making the die, debossing does have a higher initial cost for set-up but it is a once-off cost and is not applicable to repeat orders if the artwork remains unchanged.

We are super fans of debossing, as it adds a beautiful finishing touch to a custom-branded product. The debossing technique is all about imprinting images onto a piece, creating a depressed effect.

Embossing or debossing – who’s the boss?

Many people consider debossing to be the opposite of embossing, but both produce a similar effect. Embossing involves having the design raised on the surface of the product whereas debossing involves pressing the design down into the product. Embossing also has the tendency to interfere with the back of your product, if you’re printing on something made of cardboard, paper or leather, whereas debossing doesn’t affect the back of your piece and can be used on both sides. We like the debossing technique as it is less complicated but still produces beautiful personalised designs that stand out from the crowd.

What we love about debossing

Aside from the fact that the perceived value of your promotional product or corporate gift will immediately increase, there are plenty more benefits to choosing to deboss your corporate gifts or merchandise.

  • The application of ink to the design is a simple process.
  • You can print on both sides of your product no matter the material.
  • It’s the best technique for a wide range of products, from leather wallets to notebooks.

Which products and materials can be debossed?

Debossing works best when working with a relatively simple design like text, logos, a single image or initials (we can advise). In terms of materials, the following are recommended favourites for the debossing branding technique.

  • Leather and imitation leather
  • Cardboard
  • Various types of paper and recycled paper
